Armstrong's Nor-Val Sports Centre — its ice sheet currently carries the name Sunbelt Arena — runs a friendly weekday drop-in program from September 9 to the end of March that is unusually welcoming to adults who just want to play. Adult and senior (55+) shinny fills the ice on Monday and Friday mornings from 10 to 11:30, an open adult (19+) shinny takes Wednesday at the same hour, and each is $7.50. Wednesday continues with an adult and seniors' skate from 11:45 to 12:45 for $2, Friday has a free parent-and-tot skate at the same time, and the whole town turns out for the Sunday Family Skate from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at $5 a person (under-twos free), with $2 Toonie Skates on select dates through the fall. There are no skate rentals, so bring your own, and the arena is closed on December 11 and 25. Times can shift for tournaments, so confirm with Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation before a special trip.
