Nor-Val Sports Centre
Armstrong's Nor-Val Sports Centre — its ice sheet currently carries the name Sunbelt Arena — runs a friendly weekday drop-in program from September 9 to the end of March that is unusually welcoming to adults who just want to play. Adult and senior (55+) shinny fills the ice on Monday and Friday mornings from 10 to 11:30, an open adult (19+) shinny takes Wednesday at the same hour, and each is $7.50. Wednesday continues with an adult and seniors' skate from 11:45 to 12:45 for $2, Friday has a free parent-and-tot skate at the same time, and the whole town turns out for the Sunday Family Skate from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at $5 a person (under-twos free), with $2 Toonie Skates on select dates through the fall. There are no skate rentals, so bring your own, and the arena is closed on December 11 and 25. Thomas Hayes Ecological Reserve Trails
The Thomas Hayes Ecological Reserve is the rare ecological reserve with sanctioned walking trails: two easy loops through the wetlands and open country southwest of Armstrong near Otter Lake, the 4.3 km Coyote Loop and the 1.7 km White Tail Wander. It is a bird-watching walk more than a climb, and the Township of Spallumcheen lists it among the area's trails. The trailhead is on Hayes Road, about 7 km southwest of downtown Armstrong. Because this is an ecological reserve, stay on the marked trails and leave nothing behind. No dogs are allowed on the trails.
