Anarchist Mountain Lookout

The Anarchist Mountain Lookout is the South Okanagan's great reveal. As Highway 3 climbs out of Osoyoos toward Rock Creek in a series of switchbacks, a signed pullout on the big hairpin turn opens onto the whole picture at once: the town on its sand spit, Osoyoos Lake stretching south across the border into Washington toward Oroville, the vineyards and desert benches of the valley floor, and the mountains stacking up on either side. It is a free, drive-up stop — no trail, no facilities, just a small roadside pullout with room for a handful of cars — and the one thing to know before you go is the approach: the pullout sits on a divided section of the hairpin, so you can only turn into it when travelling eastbound (uphill, away from Osoyoos). Westbound drivers should continue to a safe turnaround and come back up. Sunset is the classic time, when the lake goes gold and the lights of Osoyoos come on below. The lookout is also a stop on the BC Bird Trail, with soaring raptors and Lewis's woodpeckers among the birds to watch for. If you want a picnic, the Ministry of Transportation's Anarchist Mountain rest area with picnic tables and a pit toilet is about 3.7 km further up the highway.
