Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre

Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, owned and run by the Osoyoos Indian Band, is where the South Okanagan's desert stops being scenery and becomes a living place. The strikingly modern, sustainably built centre opens onto more than 1.5 km of walking trails through wild sage and antelope brush on a 50-acre site above Osoyoos Lake, with interpreters leading guided walks and the Chief's Lookout giving the long view down the valley — bring water, a hat and good shoes. Inside, two multi-sensory theatres bring the legends of Sen'klip the Coyote to life, the Critter Corner introduces a live western rattlesnake and a Great Basin gopher snake alongside the work of the Nk'mip Rattlesnake Research Project, and the Living Lands outdoor exhibit, sculpture gallery and reconstructed village tell the story of the Syilx people and their land. Watch for Calliope hummingbirds, western meadowlarks, California quail and soaring golden eagles and ospreys on the trails; the centre is a stop on the BC Bird Trail. It is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., year-round, with occasional private-event closures posted on the website. Admission is $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and students, $14 for children under 18 and $43 for a family of two adults and their children. The site is fully accessible — a ramp from the parking lot, gravel pathways and golf-cart tours on request for anyone who needs help with the upper trail — and pets are not permitted on the trails. Allow an hour and a half to two hours, and finish in the gift shop, which stocks Indigenous-made art.
