Spotted Lake (kłlilx'w) Viewpoint

Spotted Lake — kłlilx'w to the Syilx people — is one of the strangest and most beautiful sights in British Columbia, and you can see it from the side of the road. About 10 km west of Osoyoos on Highway 3, a roadside pullout on the north side of the highway looks down over a small lake so dense with minerals that, as the water evaporates through the summer, it separates into dozens of round pools, each ringed in white and tinted blue, green or yellow by its own chemistry. The pattern changes week by week and year by year, so no two visits look the same; late summer, when the pools are most distinct, is the classic time, but the lake is worth a stop whenever you pass. This is a viewpoint, not a destination you walk into. Spotted Lake lies on private Osoyoos Indian Band land and is a sacred Syilx site: there is no access beyond the fence except through authorized Sẁiẁs Spirit Tours access. Visitors view the lake from the roadside pullout and should not approach the gate, the shoreline or the water. Pull fully off the highway, take your photographs from the pullout, and if you want to understand what you are looking at, book the guided cultural tour or visit the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos, where the story of the lake and its people is told first-hand.
