Okanagan Cideries for Apple Season
Apple season is a natural time to taste Okanagan cider. Many of the valley's cideries press fruit from their own orchards, and several pair a flight with a real kitchen, lawn games for the kids or a spot for the dog.
Some tasting rooms are seasonal, so check hours before you go. The Lake Country Cider Fest is listed for October 17 and 18 on the Lake Country Cider Trail; confirm details with the organizer before you go.
Cider from the orchard outside the door
- Creek & Gully Cider (Penticton): Naramata Bench cider made from certified-organic apples grown right outside the tasting room. Take a flight of crisp, dry ciders onto the orchard patio and look out over the trees they came from.
- Orchard Hill Estate Cidery (Osoyoos): One of BC's original estate cideries, pouring apple ciders from its own South Okanagan orchards on the highway between Oliver and Osoyoos. Open seasonally, mid-May through October.
- Tony's Craft Cidery (Coldstream): Small-batch ciders on a cozy tasting-room porch, out among 50 acres of apple and cherry trees in Lavington. Pair a flight with something from the seasonal menu. It's an easy, scenic detour on the road from Vernon to Lumby.
- Rose Hill Orchard & Cidery (Lake Country): Pick your own cherries, peaches or apples, then trade the bucket for a cider flight under the trees. A working orchard with a farm shop and picnic tables.
- NOMAD Cider (Summerland): A small farm-to-glass cidery on Bottleneck Drive making low-intervention ciders from fresh-pressed Okanagan apples and pears. Its wild-fermented ciders take cues from England, France, Spain, Germany and Quebec, and the picnic area under the walnut trees looks out to Giant's Head Mountain.
Cider with a proper meal
- Cambium Cider Co (Vernon): An orchard cidery paired with a genuine restaurant, so a quick stop can turn into a full afternoon. Order beyond a flight, because the kitchen is worth exploring too. Dogs aren't allowed inside or on the patio, but leashed dogs are welcome at a few picnic tables in the orchard.
- Farmstrong Cider Company (Armstrong): A menu that changes often, wood-fired pizzas reviewers call standout, and board games at the table for anyone who wants to linger.
- Upside Cidery (Kelowna): A big, lively cidery with lawn and upstairs patio seating, wood-fired pizza and real non-alcoholic options.
- Ricardo's at Soma (Kelowna): Chef Ricardo's Italian-leaning plates with Soma's craft ciders on an orchard patio in southeast Kelowna. A relaxed spot to linger over a flight and a shared board. Open seasonally, Thursday to Sunday.
Bring the kids (and the dog)
- Folktale Cider (Lake Country): A trampoline, zipline, chicken coop and cider-and-wine slushies. A rare cider stop where kids have as much to do as the adults.
- Millionaires' Row Cider Co. (Summerland): A family-run cidery on a historic orchard, with a picnic area, board games and apple slushies for the kids.
- Truck 59 Ciderhouse (West Kelowna): An orchard cidery with a family-and-dog-friendly main lawn, lawn games and a separate adults-only lounge.
- Summerland Heritage Cider Company (Summerland): A "bark board" built for visiting dogs, and complimentary slushies for the humans.
- Scenic Road Cider Co. (Kelowna): An award-winning cidery in a 100-year-old heritage building, with a picnic area where you can bring your own food to go with the tastings.
Small-batch and something different
- Dominion Cider Co. (Summerland): Dry, fruit-forward bottles, plus custom-label cans for events. A cidery for people who want something beyond the standard sweet apple can.
- Shuswap Cider Company (Enderby): A small craft cidery run by two women on a farm beside the Shuswap River. The ciders use BC apples plus fruit and botanicals from the farm and the Shuswap area, poured as flights and on tap, with a dog-friendly patio.
- Liber Farms & Winery (Osoyoos): A small winery just off Highway 97 with a beautiful patio and homemade apple juice and cider.
- The View Winery & Vineyard (West Kelowna): A smaller winery with its own on-site cidery, so you can try cider alongside the wine, and live music on the patio.
Let someone else drive, or taste at the market
- Top Cat Tours (Penticton): Running since 2001, with daily shared and private tours and door-to-door pickup. Options include beer, cider and distillery tours. Season: March to November.
- Signature Connections (formerly Kelowna Concierge) (Kelowna): A long-running tour and shuttle company whose "Sip and Sample" tour takes in craft breweries, distilleries and cideries.
- Pedego Electric Bikes Oyama (Lake Country): E-bike rentals from Gatzke's Farm Market, right beside the Okanagan Rail Trail between Wood and Kalamalka lakes. Partner tours pair a ride with wine or cider tastings; riders must be 16 and up.
- Penticton Farmers' Market (Penticton): Every Saturday morning from mid-April to the end of October on the 100 block of Main Street. Among more than 90 vendors, local wineries, cideries and breweries offer samples.
