Winter in the Okanagan, without the downhill
Not everyone in the group wants to ski all day, and plenty of people don't ski at all. The Okanagan's mountain villages and valley towns have a whole second winter going on: tube parks that run into the evening, trails built for fat bikes, lit forest walks and snowshoe dinners, plus quiet lakeshore spots where the winter birds gather.
Skating rinks and cross-country and snowshoe trails have their own guides, and so do sleigh rides, dog sledding and snowmobile tours, so this one sticks to everything else. Mountain conditions change fast, so check each operator's hours before you drive up.
Tubing and snow play
- Big White Tube Park (Happy Valley) (Big White): Five specially groomed lanes and a tube lift, with no skill or equipment needed. Tickets are sold for timed two-hour windows and only a limited number go on sale, so book online ahead.
- Tube Town – SilverStar Tube Park (SilverStar): Truck-sized tubes, several lanes and a tube lift beside Brewer's Pond, included in the resort's My1Pass. Next door, a fenced mini-snowmobile track lets children aged six to twelve (under 100 lb) drive supervised laps.
- Tim Hortons Tube Park – Apex (Apex): At the base area beside the beginner slopes, running on weekends and holidays through the season. On Friday and Saturday nights it runs under the lights from 4 to 9 pm, with tickets sold in two-hour blocks.
- Baldy Mountain Resort (Baldy): The Magic Carpet stays open until 7 pm on Friday and Saturday nights for tubing and beginner skiing under the lights. You can also borrow discs at the ticket office for winter disc golf beside the Sugarlump Chair.
