Where to skate this winter
Okanagan skating comes in three flavours: natural ice up in the ski villages, outdoor rinks in the valley towns that open when the cold settles in, and indoor arenas that run public skates on a regular schedule. Some are free, some lend or rent skates, and many ask you to bring your own.
Outdoor ice depends on the weather and arena sessions shift around hockey bookings, so check the rink's own schedule before you go.
Ski-village ice
- Adventure Skating Loop & Shinny Pond – Apex (Apex): A kilometre of Zamboni-smoothed ice looping through the forest, with the Shinny Pond beside it for pickup hockey. For 2026/27 a full-day skate pass is $15 for ages 13 and up and $7.50 for 12 and under; it is weather-dependent natural ice.
- Brewer's Pond Skating – SilverStar (SilverStar): Two and a half acres of natural ice with a fire at the edge, included in the resort's My1Pass day ticket and season pass. Skate rentals, stick rentals and sharpening are at the Brewer's Pond Base.
- Happy Valley Ice Skating Rink – Big White (Big White): What the resort calls Canada's highest outdoor skating rink, fully lit for night skating, with a bonfire every afternoon after 3 pm and "ice buddies" to steady beginners. Skates, sticks and helmets can be rented at the Happy Valley rental shop.
Outdoor rinks in town
- Stuart Park Outdoor Rink (Kelowna): A free rink on the downtown waterfront that opens in early December, weather permitting. The rental hut runs 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily but closes when the temperature drops below −10°C.

- Peachland Outdoor Ice Rink (Mountain View Park) (Peachland): Flooded nightly by Peachland Fire and Rescue volunteers and open free from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., set up for 3-on-3 hockey as well as pleasure skating. It relies on natural freezing, typically from late December or January into February.
- Jeffers Park Skating Rink (Coldstream): A covered, volunteer-run outdoor rink in Lavington, free and first-come, first-served, lit until 10:45 p.m. There is a public skate with no sticks daily from 4 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9 to 10.
